Orchard races to 5-point lead

CEBU CITY – Defending champion Orchard Golf and Country Club opened a five-point lead over Wack Wack Golf Club Wednesday at the start of the 68th Philippine Airlines Interclub golf team championships.

Kristoffer Arevalo, a 15-year-old former world junior champion, made three birdies against a single bogey to lead Orchard with 38 points.

“I was nervous, but I thought I played well,” said Arevalo who had eight birdie chances inside 12 feet in the last nine but made only one.

Raymond Sangil and JP de Claro each had 32 points while Ace Stehmeier added 27 for a first round total of 129. Eric Borromeo, the fifth player, was disqualified for signing the wrong scorecard.

It’s a good start, according to Sangil.

“But I believe the tournament will be won at the Club Filipino de Cebu,” said Sangil.

The second and third rounds will be played at A surprise second was Wack Wack which drew 114 points from Samuel Sy (33), Elphege Wong (31), Tommy Manotoc (30) and Garry Uy (30).

Manila Southwoods took third spot with 120 points behind Justin Quiban (32), Ryu Ken Yasuma (32), Antonio Asistio (31) and Theody Pascual (25).

A point behind was Del Monte Golf Club which drew 32 from Noel Langamin and three 29s from Rodelo Dalimoos, Patrick Fudolin and Janzen Morilla.

Host CCC had a bad start with 111 points. Scorers were Harvey Sytiongsa (30), Kiyofumi Takahashi (29), Montito Garcia (28) and Carl Almario (24).

In the Founders division also played at CCC, Villamor drew a pair of 33s from Richard delos Santos and Garry Sales.

Villamor amassed 121 points to edge Tagaytay Highlands by a single point with Club Filipino de Cebu in third spot with 119. Alabang Country Club was fourth with 118 and Valley Golf fifth with 116.
