BACOLOD CITY: Orchard Golf and Country Club won the championship division crown on its first try as it carded 126 Saturday for a four-day total 477 points in the Philippine Airlines Men’s Interclub championship which ended at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.
The 22-year-old John Kier Andon, coming from a two-day rest, came up with another remarkable performance with a birdie on the par-3 13th hole that complemented three bogeys and 14 pars for a day’s best 34 points.
“I feel great today. This tournament has been good for us. I am proud of our team,” said Abdon, referring to their debut in the premier championship division after 12 years and one championship title last year in the Founders division.
Stephen King Stehmeier carded a 33 and brother Ace Stemeier finished with 30 and Salvador Enrique Arcilla had 29 to give Orchard an 18-point lead over second placer Alabang, which settled with 459.
Bukidnon’s Del Monte scored 453 for third place.
“Going into the final round our strategy was just like a one-on-one against our opponents. We were not on the defensive because we were leading by 10 points going to the last day. We started strong and we finished strong,”said team manager Rene Garovillo.
In addition to leading Orchard to the championship, Abdon topped the individual plum with 69 points. Antonio Assistio of Manila Southwoods placed second with 66, Andres Saldana of Alabang Country Club and Leonard Lofranco of Del Monte were tied for third with similar 33s and Julius Susarno of co-host Bacolod Golf was fourth with 62.
Completing the top 10 cast were defending champion Cebu Country Club (437), Camp John Hay of Baguio City (175), MSU Golf and Country Club (173), Fil Oz Sydney (171), Greenhills West (168), Anvaya Cove of Subic (165) and Moffet Field Golf (164).
Co-host Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club topped the Founders division with 452, with Manila Southwoods in second with 433, Wack Wack was third (404), Valley Golf fourth (402) and Riviera Golf Club fifth (397). Eagle Ridge dominated the Sportswriters division with 384. A far second was Lumbia with 377 and Club de Filipino de Cebu for third with 376, Bacolod Golf and Country Club at fourth with 360 while Davao City Golf finished fifth with 358.
Fil-Am-Hawaii dominated the Friendship division with 319 followed by Victorias Golf and Country Club with 313 and South Cotabato with 312. Southern California Red Hawk ruled the International division with 355. Bay Area Golf Association for second with 330 and Fil-Am Hawaii with 319 for third. – FRANK CALAPRE
